-
- "POP-LABEL" (aka "PL") is a small, fast, "Pop-Up Window" program for
- creating/printing LABELS on EPSON (and compatible) DOT MATRIX PRINTERS.
-
- Designed for those times when you need one or more (thousands) of simple
- labels for Computer Disks, Report Covers, Inventory Items, Warning Labels,
- Packages, Storage Cartons, Mailing Labels, Return Address Labels, or for
- just about any other reason.
-
- All that you need to do is to place the TWO files "PL.EXE" & "REG.DAT"
- somewhere in your "PATH" (automatically placed into "C:\" for you, if you
- run SETUP.EXE).
-
- From then on, no matter what drive/directory you are in, anytime you need a
- label just enter "PL". The "Pop-Label Window" will quickly appear on the
- Lower Part of your screen, ready to receive your input. It sure beats
- reaching for your old trusty (rusty) typewriter.
-
- If installed properly by running SETUP.EXE, PL will always READ/WRITE
- To/From the "Official" PL Sub-directory named "C:\POPLABEL". It will do
- this, no matter what drive or sub-directory you may currently have as your
- default directory. It will also do this WITHOUT any need for you to place
- "C:\POPLABEL" into your PATH. This feature helps to keep your labels
- organized by placing ALL of your "Saved" labels in the same directory.
-
- If NOT installed properly, and C:\POPLABEL does NOT exist, PL will then
- READ/WRITE to your current, default directory (wherever that may be).
-
- POP-LABEL OPTIONS
-
- UP TO ELEVEN (11) PRINTED LINES: Effective with Version 2.2, we added six
- extra lines to the printed output. This added ability allows much more
- versatility with different size labels. It can even let you create TWO
- different 15/16" labels at the same time, in an "alternating" manner.
-
- To do this, use standard 3.5" x 15/16" labels. Enter the text for Label One
- into the five lines (fields) located ABOVE the "Blue Line" field. If Label
- One doesn't use ALL 1st five lines, don't worry about it, that's okay.
-
- Then move your cursor down until it's on Field #7, the 1st field just BELOW
- the "Blue Line" field. Then enter your text for Label Two into those LAST
- five lines.
-
- If Label Two has no data for the last few remaining "Blank" lines, move
- to each of those blank lines, and insert a "Spacebar" (enter 1 blank space
- into each field so that each is printed as a "Blank Line").
-
- The above is necessary because "Ending Fields" (any empty fields remaining
- after your last field with entered text), are completely ignored by PL.
- By placing a Spacebar into each of them, they are no longer "Empty", and
- no longer ignored.
-
- Then, when asked, set the "Skipped Lines Between Labels" setting to "1".
-
- To sum up the previous few paragraphs...
-
- To keep the linespacing as it should be, you should have 5 printed or blank
- lines for the 1st label, then a skipped line for the space between the two
- labels (where the blue line is), and then the last 5 printed or blank lines
- for label two. Set the Pop-Label variable for "Skipped Spaces Between
- Labels" to "1" (when you are asked on the screen).
-
- PRINTING REDIRECTION: Send Printed Output To LPT1:, LPT2:, or to a DISK
- FILE named "POPLABEL.PRN" (which is saved in the "C:\POPLABEL" directory).
-
- If you print a large number of labels to the Disk File, you may then use
- the MS/DOS file called "PRINT.COM" to print "POPLABEL.PRN" to your printer
- "In The Background", in a multi-tasking mode, allowing you use of your
- computer for other (non-printing) tasks simultaneously. Big time saver!
-
- NUMBER OF COPIES: Print as many copies of a label as you wish, up to 9,999
- at a time.
-
- SET A LEFT MARGIN: For printing on envelopes or on larger label sizes (such
- as pre-printed Shipping Labels, etc.).
-
- SET NUMBER OF SKIPPED LINESPACES BETWEEN LABELS: This is useful for when
- you are using labels which are longer than 15/16th of an inch in depth.
- This allows you to use larger labels such as 2"x3", 3"x4", 4"x5", and so
- on.
-
- Actually, the number of skipped linespaces DOES NOT refer to the line
- spaces between one paper label's bottom edge, and the top paper edge
- of the next label. Instead, it determines the number of linespaces between
- the last "PRINTED LINE" of one label and the first "PRINTED LINE" of the
- next label.
-
- If you select to print MORE THAN ONE copy of a label, you will be given and
- option of viewing a "PRINT PREVIEW" On-Screen, to see if your vertical
- spacing is correct before you actually print any labels in the printer.
-
- UNDERSTANDING LINESPACING
-
- Sometimes, "LineSpacing" may seem a little confusing, especially when only
- making a few copies of one small label. To try to simplify things, remember
- this.
-
- Usually, most Dot Matrix Printers are set to a "SIX LINES PER INCH" line
- space size (66 lines per 11" page). That means if you are using a roll (or
- strip) of 15/16" labels, you can only fit up to five (5) lines of type on
- each label, and the sixth line will fall in the spot in-between two of the
- labels.
-
- As a result, the printer must always do a linespace a total of SIX (6)
- times for each label when using 15/16" labels (even if you typed an address
- on only three of the lines). This is necessary to maintain proper label
- spacing in the printer.
-
- So six (6) lines per label are needed, even if you only typed something on
- one or two lines. There are two ways YOU can make sure that these six line
- spaces are always printed.
-
- Method #1- Enter "something" into ALL of the first FIVE fields (use the
- spacebar key to enter one blank space on the empty lines). Then, set the
- "Skipped Lines Between Labels" setting to ONE (the default) when asked.
-
- Method #2- If you entered an address (or anything else) into the first 3
- fields, press your "Page Down" key, and don't enter anything into the
- blank fields. Then, when you reach the "Skipped Lines Between Labels"
- setting, set it to "3". That will give you: 3 fields with text to be
- printed, plus 3 printed Blank Lines, which equal 6 linespaces per label.
-
- With 15/16" labels, the SUM of the number of fields containing data, PLUS
- the number of "Skipped Lines Between Labels" must always equal SIX (6)
- lines for proper label spacing in the printer.
-
- When using 15/16" labels and printing TWO labels at once, the same formula
- as above applies, except that the SUM should equal "12".
-
- For different size labels, using a combination of BOTH the "LEFT MARGIN"
- and "SKIPPED LINES" settings, you can use an assortment of label or
- envelope sizes with uniform printing positions on every item.
-
- SAVING & LOADING LABELS AS DISK FILES
-
- PL lets you "Save" & "Load" assorted labels which you use (and re-use) all
- the time (for return address, notices, etc.).
-
- To LOAD a previously saved label, just press a ^L (Control + L). This
- is done by holding your "CTRL" key down, and then pressing the "L" key.
- Then just enter the "Name" of your label (include PATH if not in your
- default directory) and the label will be loaded and displayed for editing
- or printing.
-
- PL WILL NOT look in the C:\POPLABEL directory for a label if you choose
- to enter it's file name manually.
-
- The above method allows loading of early level Pop-Label LABELS, which may
- not have been saved with the "*.PL" file name extension, and which may not
- be located inside of the C:\POPLABEL sub-directory.
-
- However, when ANY label is saved (or re-saved), it will automatically be
- assigned a file name EXTENSION of ".PL". This is necessary because the
- Pop-Up File Directory Window will only show files ending with "*.PL".
-
- POP-UP LABEL DIRECTORY WINDOW: If you can't remember the name or the
- spelling of the existing label you wish to load, then press your F5 Key
- (after you use the "CTRL+L" keys) and a Pop-Up Window will appear showing
- all of the Pop-Label (*.PL) labels in either the C:\POPLABEL directory (if
- it exists) or in the DEFAULT Sub-Directory (if it doesn't exist).
-
- To SAVE a label, just enter a normal DOS file name for your label in the
- space provided when you exit (F-10 Key) from "Pop-Label" (up to eight
- characters in length). The FileName Extension of "*.PL" will automatically
- be added to your label's name (FILENAME.PL).
-
- If you wish to use all your labels from earlier versions of Pop-Label,
- place them in the "C:\POPLABEL" sub-directory. Just copy them all to that
- sub-directory, and then RENAME THEM so they all have a FileName EXTENSION
- of "*.PL". From then on they will always show up in the Pop-Up File Window.
-
- HELPFUL HINTS
-
- To erase an entire line of text, press your "HOME" key, and then press
- your "^END" keys (Control key + END key). That key combination deletes
- all characters from the current cursor position to the end of the line.
- Of course, Backspace and Delete will also work, but just a bit slower.
-
- To "Jump" to the Top or Bottom field (when entering field entries), press
- your PageUp or PageDown keys.
-
- Use the "COPY" and "PASTE" functions to copy or move lines of text up
- or down in PL. "ALT+C" = Copy The Current Line the cursor is on, and
- "ALT+P" = Paste The COPIED Line into the current line the cursor is on.
- Using "Paste" will overwrite any existing text on the current line.
-
- To EXIT from PL quickly, just press your "F-10 Key" TWICE.
-
- SHORTCUT #1: When I'm short on time (and only have a few address labels to
- print), I print the label(s) on regular paper (not on a gummed label).
-
- I then cut the address to about label size and use 2" wide transparent tape
- to affix it to an envelope, package or pre-printed shipping label.
-
- This saves the time and trouble of removing the paper from the printer,
- adjusting the width of the tractor feed rollers, installing a roll of
- labels, printing the labels, re-adjusting the tractor feed rollers, and
- (finally) putting the paper back in again when I'm finished.
-
- Another benefit.., it makes the printed address a little more water-proof
- and smear resistant, and (if done carefully) it's hard to tell that an
- actual label was not used.
-
- SELECTING TYPE PITCH SIZES
-
- Each of the eleven "Input Fields" will vary in length from 35 to 70
- characters dependent upon which "Print Size" you select. All of the
- measurement scale selections were designed for a default label size
- of 3.5 Inches wide.
-
- In any given amount of space, more "Compressed" characters will fit
- than the larger 10 Pitch (Pica) characters. As a result, while only
- "35" 10 Pitch characters will fit across a 3.5 inch label, it will
- take "70" characters of the much smaller "Compressed 12 Pitch Elite"
- (converts into 20 pitch) to fill the same 3.5 inch space.
-
- Because of this, we have put "measured scales" (in inches) at the top
- of the Pop-Label screen display.
-
- 10cpi = 10 Pitch Pica (10 Characters Per Inch)
- 12cpi = 12 Pitch Elite (12 Characters Per Inch)
- 17cpi = 17 Pitch "Compressed Pica" (17 Characters Per Inch)
- 20cpi = 20 Pitch "Compressed Elite" (20 Characters Per Inch)
-
- The purpose of those scales is to help you keep your typed entries from
- extending beyond the end of various width labels.
-
- What ever pitch you set your printer to, use the corresponding "scale" in
- "Pop-Label" to keep an eye on the width of your typed line. How far across
- the scale your typed line should extend would depend upon the width of the
- label you are using.
-
- MANUAL PRINT PITCH SIZE CONTROL
-
- For special applications, you can "bypass" the program's automatic setting
- of the print size by pressing the "F5 Key". Once this key is pressed, you
- can then set your printer "Manually" to ANY pitch setting you wish to use.
-
- Most printers have control buttons, switches or levers for this purpose.
- Others can be set by using any of the scores of "Printer Utility" programs
- available through most Shareware Dealers.
-
- But once you activate "Manual Printer Control", you are on your own as far
- as "Characters Per Inch", "Lines Too Long" and "other" pitfalls that can
- happen if you are not a little careful about "What & Where" you put on the
- printed line. This feature also allows this program to be used with more
- brands and styles of printers (like those which are NOT very IBM/Epson
- compatible).
-
- Most of these instructions deal with using "Standard Size" 3.5"x15/16"
- labels, because that's the most common size in use today. But once you
- get comfortable with Pop-Label's settings, you will find it can be easily
- set up to use most ANY SIZE LABEL, from One Line File Folder Labels to
- labels of much greater depth and width.
-
- Pop-Label is also useful for other things, like making up a quick "Memo"
- or "Note" for someone. Choose selection "D" for a 70 character wide line.
- Then press the "F5 Key", and set your printer to 10 Pitch Pica print. This
- will let you type up to 11 lines of 70 larger size characters. If you need
- more lines of text for a note, then type and print the first 11 lines,
- and then use your "F3 Key" (ReStart) to create and print ANOTHER 11 lines
- of text (over and over again).
-
- It's a LOT faster than using your Word Processor, naming and opening a
- file, typing the message, printing it, and then erasing the file (and
- any backup) when you are finished. No muss - no fuss.
-
- GRAPHIC CHARACTERS:
- If your printer is set up to print IBM Extended Graphic Characters (boxes,
- single or double lines, etc.), you may enter those characters into your
- Pop-Label labels by using the following method.
-
- Place your cursor in the field where you wish to enter one or more of these
- graphic characters. Then, press (and hold down) your "ALT" key. While
- holding down the "ALT" key, from your "NUMERIC KEYPAD" (not from the
- alphabet numbers) enter various 3 digit numbers ranging from 128 through
- 256. When you release the ALT key, the graphic will appear on screen.
